TOKUJI HAYAKAWA

Tokuji Hayakawa (1894- 1980)

Tokuji Hayakawa, Sharp founder, was born in November 3th, 1883 at Nikonbashi, Tokyo. When his parents got sick, he adopted by Kumahachi in Fukugawa City. Since his age was 2 year, he never met his real parents.

On November 1901, a blind woman known as Inoue, recommend him to works with Yoshimatsu Sakata business. Tokuji got some lessons from Sakata. His boss said that to get succeed, Hayakawa should working so hard. He worked nearly a decade in this umbrella accessories factory.

In 1912, Tokuji invent a belt, named as Tokubi Lock a got a patent in this product. He got 120 yen from this belt business. In 1913, he has his second patent right by making a water crane. He has good finance on 1915, after he got a tender to made metal stationery. At the same time, he established Hayakawa Brothers Metal Stationery Factory with his brother. After eight year, this company made profit until 50.000 yen per month.

But it wont be long. An earthquake attacked Kanto. He lost his factory, also his wife and 2 sons. Luckily, he still has 10.000 yen and gold which price about 4.000 yen. Then he moved to Osaka. In this city he restart his business. In November 1924, he built Hayakawa Metal Industry Research Center.

With no electricity basic knowledge, he start to made a small radio on April 1929. After succeed with the radio, he made another electronic equipment, until he also produce television, refrigerator, etc. In 1970, he Changed his business company into Sharp Corporation.
